Opportunities for Hydrogen and new hazards introduced by the Energy Transition

Dear ##aanhefvoornaam##,

In the last five years NAP has dedicated many meetings to the electrification of the Process Industry. From pitches with solutions/ideas, to high level speakers on the path forward and new technologies needed to successfully support the Energy Transition.

In the Meeting of September 15th we have invited the SIG Sustainability and the SIG Process Safety to share with us their views on parts of this transition. The SIG Sustainability will present the impact of Hydrogen and its connecting role in the energy transition and the SIG Process Safety will focus on the new hazards introduced by the Energy Transition.

In the first presentation Toon Boonekamp and Cees Smit will look into Hydrogen. Hydrogen can look forward to increasing interest as part of the energy transition in recent years. On the one hand as a fuel in a number of applications and on the other hand as a storage and transport medium for sustainable energy. Hydrogen can therefore play an important connecting role. In their presentation, Toon and Cees will also touch upon the safety aspects of the transport and use of hydrogen. Fables and facts are separated so that a good assessment can be made when using of hydrogen.

Tijs Koerts will do the second presentation on behalf of the SIG Process Safety and zoom in on the new hazards that accompany the Energy Transition. The energy transition involves chemicals like ammonia, hydrogen and new technologies like batteries and electrolysers that might be used in larger and different conditions. These contain new hazards that need to be addressed properly. An overview of these will be shown by Tijs and discussed with the audience.

Toon Boonekamp is Water and Energy advisor at Arcadis. From this role he takes up the technical side of sustainability where water and energy are inextricably linked. How to make optimal use of this is one of the core questions within his projects. His goal is to look for circular solutions and to find the balance between (industrial) demand and the natural supply. Within NAP he is the Chair of the SIG Sustainability.

Cees Smit is specialist in safety at Arcadis. He is particularly knowledgeable on the storage, distribution and shipment of liquids and gases. In his role, Cees enjoys to contribute to the knowledge about how to deal with hydrogen in order to make sure decisions are taken in the right context.

Tijs Koerts has been Chair of the SIG Process Safety for many years. As an experienced Production and Safety Leader he is currently Operations Director for the European Process Safety Centre (ESPC) and founder of the Dutch Process Safety conference. With great ambition and passion for safety he also runs Koerts Consultancy, advising companies with respect to Process Safety
