NAP CONTACT MEETING

"Artificial Intelligence for the Process Industry"

Dear member,

We are pleased to invite you to the upcoming NAP contact meeting on November 21st, themed “Artificial Intelligence for the Process Industry.” The event will take place at Hotel Van der Valk Houten.

Join us for an insightful gathering where we will explore the transformative possibilities AI offers to the Process Industry. We have invited three distinguished speakers who will share their expertise and practical applications in engineering and operations:

  • Artur Schweidtmann, Assistant Professor at TU Delft, will present on the transformative potential of AI within the industry.
  • Marc Waterman from Shell will share his experiences integrating AI with a focus on safety.
  • Rimma Dzhusupova from McDermott will kick off the event by discussing AI solutions focussed at optimizing workflows for engineering and construction project execution.

We look forward to an engaging discussion and the opportunity to connect with you and fellow members of the NAP network.

Location: Hotel Van der Valk Houten
Date: November 21st

Kick off: "Artificial intelligence for EPC industry"
In this kick off, we provide a high-level overview of how artificial intelligence is transforming EPC sector by automating key elements of the workflow, enhancing quality, and accelerating project execution. It includes an overview of AI initiatives within McDermott that develop tools for automatic information extraction from engineering drawings, early identification of design errors, and the use of large language models for technical report writing, showcasing their potential to save time, improve quality and reduce re-work on the projects.

Rimma Dzhusupova, PhD, has held various positions, ranging from engineering to managing departments. Since 2020, Rimma has been the AI Initiative Lead at McDermott Ltd. In this role, she initiated and now leads a global AI engineering department that is at the forefront of developing AI solutions focused on optimizing operational workflows for engineering and construction project execution.

First presentation: "Artificial intelligence for the Process Industry"
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing industries worldwide, achieving remarkable success in automated decision-making across domains like computer vision and games, often surpassing human performance. In this presentation, a high-level overview of AI and its transformative potential in the process industry will be provided. A new software tool for the digitization of existing flowsheets, such as Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), will be introduced. Following this introduction, novel AI tools developed to support process engineering and operation will be discussed, including tools for the autocompletion of P&IDs, automatic translation from PFDs to P&IDs, and automatic correction of P&IDs. Finally, examples from the research projects with industry partners will be presented.

Artur M. Schweidtmann is a tenured assistant professor for chemical engineering at Delft University of Technology and director of the Process Intelligence Research lab (www.pi-research.org). His research focuses on the combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and chemical engineering. He received his Master of Science from RWTH Aachen University in 2017 and defended his Ph.D. from RWTH in 2021, both in Chemical Engineering. During his studies, he spent the academic year 2013/2014 at Carnegie Mellon University as a visiting student via the DAAD ISAP program. He performed his Master thesis at the University of Cambridge.

Second presentation: "Artificial Intelligence in HSE (T-Pulse) on the HH1 site"
For Shell, the safety of workers is the highest priority; that is why Shell embraces innovations that targets prevention of incidents and stimulates a good safety culture. The AI tool T-Pulse, detects deviations of industry standard safety rules during the execution of construction and in production facilities . Safety observations are reported to a dedicated team, as a short film, who sequencely uses these films for coaching and learning with the relevant teams. Calibration and adjustments of T-Pulse detection system, to the specific work location is done during the first phase after installation.

Marc Waterman is an accomplished professional in Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE), with over 15 years of experience in the HSSE field and more than a decade as an operations manager and process technologist. He began his career at Shell in 2001 as a Production Specialist in Moerdijk. Over the years, Marc has held several key positions, including Shell Distribution Manager for the BeNeLux, and HSSE&SP Manager for major projects in Malaysia and Germany. Following his role as Senior Environmental Advisor at Shell Pernis, Marc took on the position of HSSE Manager for the pioneering Holland Hydrogen 1 Project in 2022.
